{foto friday} — for the love of figs.

21 Sep

i’m pretty sure it’s fig season..

and i love me some figs… just love ’em…

i decided to try ALL THREE kinds of figs this year… even though i have always heard that black mission figs are the best… i wanted to give them all a fair chance and then decide for myself… i had only had the black figs prior to this little experiment…

and so my roommate and i did just that… we tried all three varieties – savouring each one…

the brown fotographed the best…

but the black definitely tasted the best 🙂

oh, and did i mention how i have a fig tree?!

well, my roommate does.  and i get to look at it.  and water it and love it. last year around this time, it produced its first and only fig.  so we had a little ceremony and he was kind enough to share the fig with me.  it was SO delicious and such a special moment.  did you know it takes the fig tree roughly a decade to mature before it can produce fruit?! patient lil’ suckers…

in the tale of adam and eve, i’m pretty sure she was tempted with a fig, not an apple… they are just so… what is it about a fig?!  it’s the texture, and it’s the way you eat one… it’s almost sloppy… 🙂

yum.  hooray figs.

ooo, those are so pretty! my husband and I are building a house…I feel inspired to get a fig tree, and hopefully enjoy a fig for a 10-year building anniversary. FUN. are you going to post any recipes for figgie things? or did you just savor each one raw? 🙂

i had every intention of creating some kind of fabulous recipe for them, but we simply devoured them raw… hehe. they’ll be around a little longer, and i just saw a post on a blog i follow for fig brulee! any suggestions?! working with fruit is a bit of a challenge for me…

just saw that you replied! apparently the follow-up comment checkbox is malfunctioning, through no fault of yours I’m sure. a friend of mine recently started a food blog – findingthekitchen.com – and she made roasted chicken with figs and bacon. maybe check that out? to be honest, I’ve never worked much with figs either…

Damn I am a envious. We only get totally over ripe black figs here in Ireland. Usually too ripe to hold let alone to cook with. They look awesome.
    Have a great weekend,

      thanks for the comment, Conor!

Green figs are the best, but you need to wait until they ripen. then they become as sweet as honey. the black ones get sweet too but not as sweet as the green ones.

    Fig Fan 🙂
