foto friday – manhattan henge

27 Jul

so – right around this time of year – and i think once again near the winter, the sun is positioned just right in the sky, and at sunset – it passes through the main strips in manhattan {14th street, 34th street, 42nd street}, illuminating the streets and causing intense building shadows and traffic to literally stop.

i had heard of this event thanks to my friend anthony.  it is aptly referred to as, “manhattan henge” {like stonehenge} because it does create this fantastic contrast and to be frank, it’s not often the city gets that drenched with light, so people flock to it!

i set out on the M15 bus uptown and stopped at 42nd street on the east side and started walking west…

then i saw this huge group of people, and knew that’s where i needed to be…

so i got up in there and started shooting…

there were a ton of “photographers” eager to capture the moment – i love how in this shot, you can see the buildings in the sunglasses in front 🙂

that’s the chrysler building – pretty isn’t she?!

starting to see where it gets its name?! 🙂

“manhattan henge”

the sun was moving quick, so i turned around to see what was happening behind me…

snapped this photo…

and stepped down into the streets…

where plenty of others were out snapping photos as well…

stopping traffic and everything…

new yorkers don’t care – they’re the ultimate honeybadgers!

like this guy… he stood in front of this cab for a good 2 minutes, as it honked at him – people were laughing, i was nervous. hA!

mmm, i can almost feel the warmth on my skin…

love this…

manhattan henge.

I remember, early on a Saturday morning, in the early summer of 2009, I was half paying attention, and when I hear I I heard about this “Manhattan Henge” on NBC4 news. I immediately rushed to text NYC’s best photographer and my friend Audrey Michelle! Thankfully she had time to plan to get down there to see it. I think her photos truly capture the event in such a personal way! I remember hearing about it this year and it made me think about Audrey all over again! thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us!
