{pink limes!}

15 Nov

i’m always super excited when i find a new fruit or vegetable to try. i found these pink limes at a natural food market over this past summer. so naturally, i couldn’t resist tasting and taking fotos of them!

on the outside, they are slightly different-looking than other limes…

they have some cool stripes going on a slight pink hue to them…

and on the inside… a DEFINITE pink hue!  so pretty! the flesh almost resembles a grapefruit!

of course, i added them to some sparkling water… which is so refreshing and delicious!

*nom nom, sip sip*

have you ever tried pink limes?!

food fun facts :

limes are full of vitamin c and can help support healthy cells and tissue. furthermore, these particular “pink” limes are sweeter than your average lime and look great in a spread or as a garnish… also, they would work fantastically as a zest!

{specialty produce – passionfruit}

6 Aug

definitely one of the more interesting and bizarre-looking fruits i’ve eaten…

passionfruit-1

have you ever had a passionfruit?!  i bet you’ve had something with the flavour of passionfruit in it, like a drink or something… they are an interesting fruit. as they ripen, they begin to look like this foto – kind of wrinkly and you may even think it’s gone bad… but no no no! it’s just right…

when you first cut into a passionfruit, you may take a look inside and be like, “what in the world…?!”

{try-me tuesday} – a pomelo fruit

22 Jan

ever seen one of these? you may have passed them in the produce section and wondered what that odd-looking grapefruit type thing was… well, it’s a pomelo – or, pummelo. they aren’t exactly inexpensive, i will say.  this is because they are usually sold by the pound and are rather heavy.  i paid about 4 bucks for this one… but i bought it with the specific intent of sharing it on the blog with all of you.  they are super yummy.  if you like grapefruit, there’s a good chance you’ll like a pummelo… the rind is very thick {about a half inch to inch} and the flesh is usually pinkish, but can vary depending on size, origin, etc.

try one!

pummelo-1

this guy weighed about 2.5 pounds – i’ve seen them as big and as heavy as 4 pounds – that’s like a 9 dollar piece of fruit! haha

pummelo-2

check out that rind!  {and that pretty colour!}

pummelo-3

so yummy. and so good for you : fiber, vitamin c, and potassium all come with pummelo’s yummy flavour.

try one, for real!  eat them by the slice, throw them in a smoothie {white part too, it’s full of fiber!}, add to a fruit salad, freeze and throw in some soda water… whatever you do, enjoy it!

{try-me tuesday – the “christmas orange”}

18 Dec

satsuma-1

not to be confused with a clementine or “cutie” that you find in conventional grocery stores, you can typically purchase these tasty delights in most grocery stores, in the produce section… but only in the winter season.

meet the satsuma tangerine… also {rather appropriately} referred to as a “stem and leaf” tangerine… Continue reading

{try-me tuesday} — a seckel pear

4 Dec

the truth is, i like to switch it up a little.  if you were looking forward to a “travel tuesday” post, fret not – for there will be plenty others to come. i just have a good backlog of food fotos at this point and i want to share some of these before their season is over 🙂

i love trying new foods and whenever i’m in the produce department and i spot something new, i grab it up.  the beautiful seckel pear was my latest first.

i love the colour!  they are smaller than a normal pear and tend to blossom into this burgundy colour as they ripen… Continue reading
