{yellow watermelon!!!}

19 Sep

i’m a little late posting this, considering the season is over now. but this is one of my favourite things of ALL TIME! and i was so excited this year when i was able to get my hands on not only one but TWO yellow watermelons! the first time was from a dear friend who shared her CSA {community supported agriculture} box with me when she was on vacation. and the second time was randomly at an amish market – both times were locally-grown, which makes this foodie super happy.

i was thinking the other day about how many farms there are where i live… i literally drive through so many of them on a daily basis, all within 30 minutes in any direction. and i love knowing where my food comes from. seeing the actual field where this watermelon was grown is SO COOL and i believe it makes it taste better! 🙂

the farmer i spoke to about this watermelon said they even grow orange watermelons! so next year i have to make sure to look out for that! i would love to get a red, orange, and yellow and compare them side-by-side.

for me, yellow watermelon has a slightly different taste and texture. it’s hard to explain but i prefer yellow over red. if you have a chance to get your hands on one, i guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

they are usually in season and available in late july or early august… nom nom!

happy farmer audrey 🙂

have you ever had yellow watermelon? i truly hope one year i can try to grow my own!

{fair trade & organic – ice box watermelon}

19 Jun

do you know how to pick out a good watermelon?!  … one that’s guaranteed to be ripe, juicy, and flavourful?!

well, for one thing – to guarantee the flavour and ripeness, it’s important to begin with quality.

i always opt for organic food {especially produce} when i can… organic produce is grown with more care, handled with more care, and therefore just plain tastes better… in my humble {and generally RIGHT} opinion 🙂

this sticker tells us that not only is this watermelon organic, but it’s fair trade. which {happily} means the farmers that grew this watermelon are paid a FAIR WAGE for their product and services.  this is extremely important to me also because i’m a collective thinker – i am grateful for that farmer who took time to grow this beautiful fruit for me to enjoy.  and i want him/her to get paid what they are worth for doing that service. fair trade kind of cuts out the middle man, if you will.  you can read more about fair trade products here. thirsty thursday – watermelon mojitos

26 Jul

oh boy, you are seriously going to want to make sure this is on the drink table at your next summer BBQ!

i can’t take the credit for originality on this, however – i’m a huge rachael ray fan… and she had this on her show a few weeks ago and i was uber excited to have company over so i could test it out.  i think i pretty much insisted my brother come by for a visit, mostly to force him to drink my concoction 🙂

happy solstice!

nothing says summer to me quite like watermelon.  when in its seasonal prime – flavourful, juicy, fresh, delicious watermelon.

whole foods market had a one day sale – 2/$5 on these organic beauties. and i bought four. this is my last one, and i’m eating it today to celebrate summer! i bought a little melon baller, which i think is just so fun for precisely this reason 🙂 — and – way easier!! Continue reading
