{organic golden kiwi}

22 Jul

golden kiwis are not the same as regular green kiwis you see in the stores….. i mean, of course they aren’t, right?! – they’re being featured on food & foto 😉

originating in china, golden kiwis are now mostly from new zealand, and they blow regular kiwi out of the water!  {sorry, kiwi}

their thin skin is different from the regular kiwi – smooth and hairless with little freckles throughout.  they ripen just like regular kiwi, so look for one that slightly gives to the tender touch…

the flavour is similar, but the golden kiwi boasts a less-acidic quality and taste. they have almost a pineapple flavour… and i just LOVE THEM!!!

it’s one of those things you just need to get out and try.  i simply can’t find adjectives to describe the flavour… it’s just quite an experience for your tastebuds when consuming this delicacy…

golden kiwi are somewhat hard to come by – definitely a specialty item, but you may still find them on produce stands for the next few weeks…

    I love kiwis, and gold ones are a special treat.

    Do you ever scoop kiwis out with a small spoon? It looks like you’re losing some precious flesh by cutting off the skin with a knife. You can also eat the skin, although it can slightly interfere with the delicate flavor.

      hey adam how ya doin? i love golden kiwis so much!! i do occasionally scoop them out, but don’t worry… i suck the flesh right off that skin before chucking it… i just didn’t for the foto ’cause it wouldn’t have looked as pretty 😛 plus, i wanted to cut it in slices for taking to work for lunch. good lookin-out, though! 😉 i had no idea the skin was edible… if it doesn’t taste so great, what’s the benefit, if any? curious…

        Good to hear that you’re not wasting any! The skin doesn’t taste bad, although it may be an acquired taste. I usually eat it for convenience and so I know I’m not wasting any fruit, although I usually eat it with the cheaper green ones. I do not eat the stem end though, because that bit is pretty tough. If I splurge on a golden one I usually scoop it out.
