do you know what a grain elevator is?! i didn’t until the time i was visiting indiana, fotographing a wedding… a very special wedding. my cousin, M married his lady, E and and her family has a farm – they are bonafide farmers! experiencing their farm first hand was such an absolute joy! mister T is one proud owner, and he knows his farm in and out. from hydraulic garage doors to magic hoses to ceiling snow, the place is just loaded with charm that encourage memories for years.
as i said yesterday, one of my favourite moments of all time was spent on this farm on that wonderfully warm midwest day in mid may. the rain came crashing down out of nowhere, but the sun didn’t have time to really leave so the air had that yummy glare to it that you just knew was going to create the most amazing rainbow once the clouds parted…

my biggest fan anthony wanted to know the story behind yesterday’s “favourtie moment” shot. here it is. i walked through “attic winter wonderland” i called it – insulated craziness balance-beamed between one world and the next… we get to the end and mister T tells me to turn left and “climb in”… essentially, i am inside this box, just on the other side…
see that little box? i’m in one just like it… i’m just on the other side of the barn. 🙂 so after we got out of this barn, we walked over to the grain elevator. i was beyond scared, but also knew i really wanted to do this…
the grain elevator i walked up looks nothing like the ones in the wikipedia fotos… this was basically a giant ladder… and i kind of have this phobia of heights, and also a phobia of ladders – so this was a big feat for me!
there she is…
and seriously, it’s a LOT taller than it looks!
*gulp*
but i did it… one rung at a time… shaking from limb to limb…
i had *at least* one hand holding on the whole time…

Awesome Audrey!I love it!
I’m a photographer too and many yeas ago I did a shoot for a grain company in So Cal. I had to climb up a grain elevator(ladder just like that). Holy $&@@! It was swaying in the breeze. I was scared to death too but got awesome sunset shots too. They are buried with my other thousands of slides n negs

Hi sweet girl! I forgot to comment on this post a few months ago when I first read it. We made an impromptu trip up to the farm today…and I was just soaking up the tranquility and lovely views I enjoy so much here…when you came to mind 🙂 When I showed my dad this entry, I could tell he was very honored you wrote about his home. It meant a lot to him Audrey! And he was so pleased that you have such fond memories of your visit to the farm. I’m sure he feels quite isolated out here sometimes…and I know it means so much to him when others find appreciation in the place he has literally worked his entire life to maintain. Your photos, your presence, your enthusiasm….my dad just talks so highly of you!! And we would ALL love it so much to have you back here again soon to make some new memories and find new adventures!! Hopefully this summer!! Hugs to you my friend 🙂
ps. the photo of my dad in the “winder wonderland” has been my favorite photo for years. It finds its way into our yearly photo calenders EVERY year 🙂

oh dearest em. i had to read this like 4 times because it just touched my heart so much. your entire family was welcoming and made me feel at home… i think very highly of your dad, i believe i knew him very well in a previous life! 🙂 that farm is so special. not only for the personal memory of conquering a fear, but also the whole experience, as i said. and i’m so honoured that your dad appreciated the post. i told him maybe i’d come work for him… and i’m still serious about that! 🙂
