i like to make up names for my food…
i can’t remember where i picked this idea up… maybe it was during my cleanse, i was talking to someone about dairy and particularly mayonnaise and how i don’t really like it and i wish there was a better dressing for my tuna sandwiches. then i heard about trying an avocado in place of dressing – and HOLY SMOKES! what a better sammy it makes!
so, here’s the extremely simple recipe :
– wild albacore tuna {1 can per 2 people}
– avocado {1 per two people}
– cheese slices of choice
– bread of choice {i opted for whole wheat hoagie rolls because i had them laying around}
– lettuce {i used romaine}
– tomato {i used locally grown organic early girl tomatoes, because they are amazing}
whatever else you like to put on your tuna sammys. i normally would do a relish and maybe onion with the mayo… i may try to add onion next time, but relish i do not think would compliment the avocado well… but hey, if you try it – prove me wrong!
drain tuna and place in bowl, then add in avocado…
and mix together well…
toast your bread if you so desire, then smear one side with your tunacado mixture. pile the other side with cheese and tomatoes, then sprinkle on some S&P to season the tomato. add in your lettuce… smash it together…
serve with your favourite chips – i think salt and vinegar chips work best with tuna, just my humble opinion.
i washed it down with a familiar favourite – widmer brothers hefeweizen.
my roommate has a friend that often comes over to watch the football games with us. he always always ALWAYS brings his own beer – you gotta love a friend like that 🙂 – he often brings this along and there is usually one or two left over, so i sipped one with my tunacado sammy.
i love hefewiezens because they are clean and crisp, often with a citrusy undertone and they are light enough to pair with most things. this one has a nice body in that it is a little cloudy but not too heavy. i thought it complimented the sandwich rather well, as the meal was light, and so was the beer. DELISH!
I love how we’re almost food twins.
Today my lunch was an AMAZING wrap with salmon instead of tuna, roasted red peppers instead of tomatoes, and avocado! Except mine also had chick peas and toasted sunflower seeds and a cucumber dill dressing. But ALMOST twins…if you REALLY want to see it!

I love that idea. I like mayo but it very often has a bunch of junk in it. Avocado is a great substitute.

yes, me too. and it’s starting to taste less good to me 🙂 the avocado was a perfect substitute… dare i say, i think it’s better than the traditional tuna sammy recipe we all know

I would think it would be better on a hot day as well.

I just started eating meat in the past week—after seven years! In those seven years I never really wanted any meat, *except* for once in a rare while I’d crave tuna salad (with celery, onions and grapes.) So yes, this looks delicious to me!
(I’ve added avo in place of may in egg salad. Its good!)
